Calgary Bangla School

Calgary Bangla School is a community-driven language and cultural education program dedicated to preserving the Bengali language, heritage, and traditions among young people in Calgary.
Established and operated under the Bangladesh Canada Association of Calgary (BCAOC) a long-standing non-profit, non-religious, and non-political organization serving the Bangladeshi-Canadian community the school offers an enriching space where children can learn their mother tongue and connect with their cultural roots in a welcoming, engaging environment.
Mission & Vision
The mission of Calgary Bangla School is to:
  • Preserve the Bangla language among youth growing up in Canada.
  • Foster cultural identity, pride, and awareness of Bangladeshi traditions and values.
  • Support multicultural understanding by offering accessible language education to children of Bangladeshi heritage and other interested families.
The program emphasizes joyful learning, cultural appreciation, and community participation, ensuring students feel connected both to their heritage and the broader Calgary community.
History & Background
Calgary Bangla School grew from the broader cultural efforts of the Bangladesh Canada Association of Calgary (BCAOC) — a community body formed in 1973 by Bengali Canadians seeking to preserve and promote Bangladeshi culture, history, and social engagement in Alberta.
While exact founding dates for the school itself may vary from year to year, Bangla School programs have been offered consistently as part of BCAOC’s annual cultural and educational calendar, adapting to in-person and online formats as needed.
Programs Offered
Calgary Bangla School typically runs on weekends and includes structured classes designed to balance linguistic skill-building with cultural learning:
  • Bangla Language Classes: Focusing on reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. Lessons are tailored to be age-appropriate and interactive, integrating vocabulary, grammar, and conversational skills with cultural context.
  • Cultural Activities & Enrichment: Beyond language, the curriculum often incorporates Bangla history, general knowledge about Bangladesh, songs, stories, traditional games, and festival celebrations — all guided by experienced teachers and volunteers.
Classes usually run in weekly segments (for example, two time blocks on Sunday mornings), allowing students to progress through the curriculum while still balancing their regular school commitments.
Community Involvement & Notable Engagement
Calgary Bangla School is more than a language program it is a community hub that connects children and families to broader cultural celebration and civic life in Calgary. Through the support of BCAOC, students and families often engage in:
  • Cultural festivities and events such as International Mother Language Day, Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year), and other celebrations organized by local Bangladeshi associations.
  • Collaborative community programming where language learning is paired with performances, recitations, and cultural exhibitions that showcase students’ achievements.
  • Parent and volunteer participation, strengthening intergenerational ties and encouraging community pride.
Such engagement not only builds language skills, but also reinforces a vibrant sense of cultural place within Calgary’s multicultural landscape.
What Makes Calgary Bangla School Unique
Calgary Bangla School stands out in the city’s educational and cultural ecosystem because:
  • It fosters heritage language learning in a way that is community-centered and culturally rooted.
  • It is run by dedicated volunteers and community leaders through BCAOC, ensuring programs reflect the needs and aspirations of local families.
  • It provides a supportive environment where students can celebrate Bengali identity while thriving in a Canadian context strengthening multilingualism and cross-cultural understanding.
By bridging language learning with cultural celebration and community involvement, Calgary Bangla School nurtures not just fluent speakers, but confident, culturally aware young citizens of Calgary.
